As from today every residential estate agency has to join an approved ombudsman scheme or face a fine.
So far the OFT has approved two schemes: one is operated by the Ombudsman for Estate Agents Company Ltd; the other by the Surveyors Ombudsman Service. A scheme by the Register of Estate Agents is on the way.
